Dartmouth College is a private institution that was founded in 1769. It’s located on a 237-acre campus on a terrace above the Connecticut River in the rural Upper Valley region of New England in Hanover, New Hampshire. More than 90% of students live in on-campus housing, which includes residence halls, fraternity and sorority houses, college-approved coeds and undergraduate societies. The Outing Club – the oldest and largest collegiate outing club in the country – is the most popular student organization at Dartmouth, offering outdoor activities, expeditions, gear rentals, and courses. More than 50% of students participate in the many off-campus programs offered in more than 20 countries around the world. Dartmouth is also the birthplace of the programming language BASIC.
Academics
Following a liberal arts curriculum, Dartmouth provides undergraduate instruction in 40 academic departments and interdisciplinary programs, including 60 majors in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering, and enables students to design specialized concentrations or engage in dual-degree programs. The professors are among the leaders in their fields, and even senior professors teach first-year courses. The student-faculty ratio at Dartmouth College is 7:1, and the school has 62% of its classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include: Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Computer and Information Sciences, and History.
Special Highlights
Arts Across Campus. Creativity is at the heart of a Dartmouth education. The thriving campus arts district unites the Hopkins Center for the Arts, which annually presents a variety of world-class music, dance, theater, and film programs, as well as more than 100 performances; the Hood Museum of Art, which houses one of the oldest and largest American university art collections; and the Black Family Visual Arts Center.
Dartmouth Organic Farm. With a history dating back to the 1980s and 90s, the “O” Farm has grown into a hub for hands on learning at Dartmouth. It is home to an educational working garden, faculty and student research, independent projects, labs and classes, a stunning landscape that serves as a backdrop for social events of all kinds and an ecosystem that engages students in learning about sustainable food and energy systems.
School Mission & Unique Qualities
Dartmouth is one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Emerging into national prominence at the turn of the 20th century, Dartmouth has since been considered among the most prestigious undergraduate colleges in the United States. The University has affiliations with the Dartmouth–Hitchcock Medical Center and is home to the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences, the Hood Museum of Art, the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, and the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Dartmouth, being the smallest university in the Ivy League, provides students with a different experience. It’s stepping into the role of researcher; bonding with your professor over coffee; exploring new intellectual frontiers; and thriving in a diverse community. We expect you to change the world—and we give you the tools to make it happen.
Student Reviews…
“Dartmouth’s student to professor ratio is unmatched by most elite institutions. The ability to meet one on one with professors, enjoy small class sizes, and receive individualized attention in my classes is overall what made my experience and the cost of Dartmouth worth it.”
