University of Delaware is a public institution that was founded in 1743. Located in downtown Newark, its large 1,996-acre campus is set both in an urban and suburban environment combining the best in city living with more spaciousness than is typically found. Main Campus, which has most of the academic and residential buildings, features a large, roughly rectangular green space known either as “The Green” or “The Mall,” around which are many of the oldest buildings on campus. Though the buildings were constructed at various times over the course of more than a century, they follow a cohesive Georgian design aesthetic. In addition to its main location in Newark, the University has campuses throughout Delaware. There are more than 400 student clubs and organizations on campus, and the school also has a sea-faring research facility, a 146-foot ship called Hugh R. Sharp. For off-campus visits, Wilmington is about 12 miles, Philadelphia is 45 miles, and Baltimore is 55 miles away.

School Mission & Unique Qualities

The University of Delaware was the first American university to begin a study-abroad program, which was later adopted by many other institutions. The program began when Professor Raymond Watson Kirkbride took a group of eight students to Paris, France during the fall semester of 1923. Since this initial trip, the University has expanded its study-abroad program, which now encompasses more than 40 countries. UD has the distinction of educating three signers of the Declaration of Independence from back in its earliest days of being a small, private academy. Today it also holds the rare distinction of being a Land Grant, Sea Grant, and a Space Grant institution. The Fightin’ Blue Hens sports teams are represented by a costumed bird mascot named YoUDee. A group of live Blue Hen chickens reside on the school farm.
