University of Delaware is a public institution that was founded in 1743. Located in downtown Newark, its large 1,996-acre campus is set both in an urban and suburban environment combining the best in city living with more spaciousness than is typically found. In addition to its main location in Newark, the university has campuses throughout Delaware. The school also has a sea-faring research facility, a 146-foot ship called Hugh R. Sharp. When students want to leave campus, Wilmington is about 12 miles away, Philadelphia is a 45-mile drive and Baltimore is 55 miles away. The University of Delaware ran the nation’s first study abroad program in 1923, and, these days, about a third of undergraduates opt to spend time in another country.

Academics

The University of Delaware offers more than 150 graduate degree programs, including some through the highly ranked School of Education and College of Engineering. UD is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “Doctoral University” – Highest Research Activity, a designation accorded less than 3% of US universities. UD offers nearly 600 degree programs at the associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degree levels. UD’s student-faculty ratio is 12:1, and 34% of classes have fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Liberal Arts and Humanities, Finance, Marketing, and Nursing.

Special Highlights

Confucius Institute. A partner with Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters and Xiamen University, the Confucius Institute is a university-wide institute in which interdisciplinary and global academic, cultural programs and initiatives are developed. With participation from a variety of colleges and departments throughout campus, the institute advances several of UD’s most important goals including expanding our international reach and increasing its impact, strengthening global partnerships, and developing collaborative initiatives in international and transnational issues.

STAR Campus. At the University’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research Campus, we’re combining top academics and research, with industry and community partnerships. The STAR Campus is an emerging hub of innovation in health, energy, the environment, and financial technology and services. We’re seamlessly combining top-notch academics, world-changing research, creative entrepreneurship and successful community partnerships—all at one unique site.

School Mission & Unique Qualities

The Fightin’ Blue Hens sports teams, named after a Delaware Revolutionary War battalion with the same nickname, compete in the NCAA Division I Colonial Athletic Association. The mascot is a costumed bird named YoUDee, and a group of live Blue Hen chickens reside on the school farm. The University of Delaware ran the nation’s first study abroad program in 1923, and, these days, about a third of undergraduates opt to spend time in another country. UD has the distinction of educating three signers of the Declaration of Independence from back in its earliest days of being a small, private academy. Today it also holds the rare distinction of being a Land Grant, Sea Grant and a Space Grant institution.
