Georgia Institute of Technology, or “Georgia Tech,” is a public institution that was founded in 1885. The 400-acre campus lies in the heart of Atlanta, a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with many opportunities for internships and future employment. Although a number of skyscrapers such as the headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company and Bank of America, are visible from all points on campus, the campus itself has few buildings over four stories and has a great deal of greenery. This gives it a distinctly suburban atmosphere quite different from other Atlanta campuses. Freshmen are offered housing, but aren’t required to live on campus. Several extracurricular activities are available to students, including over 500 student organizations overseen by the Center for Student Engagement. As a leading technological university, Georgia Tech has more than 100 centers focused on interdisciplinary research that consistently contribute vital research and innovation to government, industry, and business. In addition to its campuses in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia Tech has campuses in France, Ireland, Costa Rica, Singapore, and China.
Academics
Georgia Tech is organized into six colleges with approximately 31 departments and academic units. It has a special emphasis on the academic fields of science and technology. It offers degrees through the Colleges of Design, Computing, Engineering, Sciences, the Scheller College of Business, and the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. Georgia Tech is classified among R1 Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activities. The University encourages undergraduates to participate in research alongside graduate students and faculty, including through its UROP program. Georgia Tech’s student-faculty ratio is 22:1, and the school has 30% of its classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Mechanical Engineering, Information Science, and Industrial Engineering.

School Mission & Unique Qualities
Georgia Tech’s mission is to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. Its mission and strategic plan are focused on making a positive impact in the lives of people everywhere. Founded as the Georgia School of Technology, Georgia Tech assumed its present name in 1948 to reflect a growing focus on advanced technological and scientific research. John Heisman was Georgia Tech’s first full-time football coach, and the Heisman Memorial Trophy was named in his honor. From the world-famous “Ramblin’ Wreck” fight song to the fun and festivities of The Week of Welcome, the Tech campus is steeped in time-honored traditions that students embrace from generation to generation. The school’s newspaper for faculty and staff, The Whistle, is named for the steam whistle in the Tech Tower that blows in intervals with the campus class schedule, and each time the Yellow Jackets score a touchdown.
Student Reviews…
“The campus is very inclusive. If something doesn’t exist you can create it! It’s in the middle of the city so you should be aware of your surroundings, but campus is very safe. The only thing I wish the school would improve on is its food since it is very average and could be way better.”
