Case Western Reserve University is a private institution that was founded in 1826. It’s set on a 267-acre campus located about 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland, where students have free access to a handful of downtown museums like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. On campus, freshmen live in one of four themed residential communities, which are called Cedar, Juniper, Magnolia, and Mistletoe. All students are invited to the annual SpringFest, a collection of music, carnival games, and activities that is the largest student-run event on campus. Case is known for its world-class research, but with more than 200 student organizations, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved outside the classroom, too. In addition to its suburban campus, the school owns University Farm, a 389-acre plot of land about 10 miles from campus where students research and take courses in biology, ecology, and art.

Academics

Case Western comprises eight schools that offer more than 100 undergraduate programs, roughly 160 graduate and professional options, and 140 dual-degree programs. Plus, there are more than 100 interdisciplinary academic and research centers and institutes. Case boasts a broad range of specialty graduate programs including a health law curriculum at the School of Law, biomedical engineering at the School of Engineering, and nonprofit management at the Weatherhead School of Management. Case is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified among R1 Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activities. The student-faculty ratio at Case Western is 9:1, and the school has more than 51% of classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science.

Student Reviews…

“CWRU offers an experience unlike many other colleges I visited. There’s strong focus on student success and many resources, like your own personal librarian and a 50,000-square-foot maker space with 3D printers and laser cutters. The social scene is also surprisingly good.”
