The mission of Western Reserve Academy education offers a transformational experience where students strive for excellence, live with integrity and act with compassion. After founding the town named in his honor, pioneer David Hudson hoped to leave one final legacy: a New England-style college that would serve as a beacon of excellence and enlightenment in Ohio. With 11 students at the college level and eight in the preparatory academy, the institution opened its doors in 1826.
WRA graduates can think critically, communicate articulately and persuasively and act responsibly. WRA offers a transformational learning experience where each student is provided every resource needed to pursue far-reaching academic and personal satisfaction by testing and exceeding his or her boundaries while leading fulfilling, purposeful lives.
Academics
The academic program at WRA offers an exceptional college preparatory education, giving its students a strong foundation in the arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Drawing on a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum, WRA’s program gives its students the academic experience and tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond, while seeking to foster in them intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.
Special Highlights
Music. WRA’s robust music program offers full-year courses in vocal performance, instrumental performance, music theory and music history. Students also take individual tutorials with adjunct music faculty, who are practitioners from the Cleveland Orchestra and Akron Symphony. In recent years, WRA musicians have traveled to Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria to showcase their work.
Academic Enrichment Center. The Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) supports students by providing guidance for the improvement of academic skills, tracking student progress, and facilitating communication with faculty. What the school looks for in students…
“Students at WRA need to be involved, so we look for students who are eager to participate in extra-curricular activities. WRA also expects a lot of its students in the classroom, so applicants need to be hard-working and have a proven track record of academic success.”
