Founded in 1867, The Storm King School celebrates a long tradition of helping students translate potential into success as they prepare for college. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, 18 varsity and club sports, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty offers students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building.
The safe and peaceful 55-acre campus is located on the crest of Storm King Mountain, overlooking the Hudson River, and adjacent to the 3800-acre Black Rock Forest Preserve. New York City, with all of its cultural richness and opportunities, is about a one hour drive or train ride to the south. In addition, the Learning Center offers support to any SKS student who needs extra help with study and organizational skills.
Academics
Our program joins the best of traditional preparatory education with innovative teaching practice in delivering our mission. At the heart of our success is the relationship between our teachers and students. Each student has an array of adults who facilitate that student’s learning and help develop the academic and life skills needed for success.
Special Highlights
Outdoor Education. Here at The Storm King School we believe strongly in the value of Outdoor Education. The school’s majestic location in the Hudson Highlands affords us the opportunity to provide students with a unique experience, becoming Storm King Mountaineers. The Mountaineers program is grounded in experiential learning with offerings appropriate for everybody.
International Environment. SKS students have diverse interests and talents. Half are American, and the other half are International, coming from 23 countries. Storm King’s welcoming atmosphere encourages interaction and engagement. Each spring, our international and foreign language students take over the Dining Hall and create both poster presentations and their own renditions of classical dishes from their homelands. Food preparation takes over every kitchen on campus during the nights preceding the fair.

What the school looks for in students…
“SKS offers a wealth of enriching classes, sports, clubs, and community service. We look for students who are full of character and grit, who want to meet others from all over the world, who participate enthusiastically to enhance favorite skills or to try new things.”
