Founded in 1909, St. Albans School is a college preparatory school for boys set on the grounds of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The School is dedicated to fostering the spiritual, intellectual, and physical development of its students. St. Albans challenges its students to achieve excellence and to embrace responsibility, and it expects them to act always with honor and to respect and care for others. St. Albans students, while taking advantages of being a boys’ school, also enjoy a coordinate relationship with National Cathedral School, our sister school for girls on the north end of the Close. This close relationship allows the School to expand on its curricular, extracurricular, and social opportunities for our students.

 Academics

St. Albans is divided into the Lower School (Grades 4 through 8, known as Forms C, B, A, I, II) and the Upper School (Grades 9 through 12, or Forms III, IV, V, VI). Both the Lower and Upper Schools offer a rigorous curriculum that seeks the development of sound analytical skills and clear thinking, while encouraging intellectual curiosity and cooperative efforts.

The Lower School curriculum emphasizes the development of basic academic skills. Boys study English, mathematics, social studies, history, science, religion, ethics, art, drama, and music. Foreign language study begins with Spanish in Form C (Grade 4); boys may elect one of four foreign languages beginning in Form I (Grade 7). The rigorous yet supportive program encourages each Lower School student to develop his abilities to the fullest.

 Special Highlights

Spiritual Life. St. Albans School welcomes students of all faiths and respects the religious traditions of all members of the diverse school community. Spiritually rooted in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the School strives to nurture in each student an awareness of God and a sense of moral responsibility. The School believes that the spiritual development of its students gives meaning to their intellectual and physical endeavors. Through both the Lower and Upper Schools, students enroll in courses ranging from Bible studies to Ethics and World Religions studies.

St. Albans Tennis Club. The St. Albans Tennis Club is an outdoor facility comprised of 8 clay courts, 2 hard courts, and a small clubhouse, situated on the magnificent grounds of the Washington National Cathedral. Members of the Tennis Club enjoy such benefits as various types of reasonably priced memberships with no additional court fees; play as early as 6:45 a.m. daily; no reservations; $10 guest fee; and an array of activities including clinics, juniors’ summer camps, tournaments, and social events.
