Welcome to Phillips Exeter Academy, a co-educational residential school serving 1000 students in grades 9 through 12, and post-graduate level. Exeter, founded in 1781 by John Phillips, has a tradition of academic excellence, a distinguished faculty, and a long history of educating young people to find their place in the world.

Exeter’s academic offerings are unrivalled: over 450 courses in 19 subject areas. The student to teacher ratio, 5:1, lets students explore the world with great support from the adults in the community. An Exeter education prepares students to use the skills learned at school in all life’s endeavors. Exeter is a life-changing experience, challenging and fun. It asks a great deal from every student—higher standards, greater expectations, and deeper engagement not only in the world of ideas, but also in the life of the community.

 Academics

Phillips Exeter Academy offers a unique college preparatory education. Exeter’s academic program is characterized by the breadth and depth of its curriculum and its collaborative learning environment. Students are able to explore topics that interest them from the introductory to the college level. The curriculum balances breadth of exposure with in-depth pursuit of a student’s strongest interests.

 Special Highlights

Foreign Language Summer Programs. Exeter students may participate in the Academy’s summer programs abroad, which are open to other high-school students as well. Each study tour combines a linguistic immersion through an academic and cultural program with activities geared toward adolescents. In the French, Spanish and Chinese programs, an Exeter instructor will serve as director, accompanying the students in their travel and excursions, and assuring supervision and frequent contact with the students.

Phelps Academy Center. The Elizabeth and Stanford N. Phelps ’52 Academy Center is designed to be the hub of student life and the campus crossroads. It was created by and for our entire community: a collaboration of students, faculty, staff, architects and builders. It draws together spaces that were once scattered across campus, giving everyone a central place to connect with others.
