Welcome to Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH). We give young people an exceptional academic experience taught by expert, caring faculty. NMH is a secular coed boarding and day school for 630 students in grades nine through 12 and postgraduate. Our wooded campus borders the Connecticut River in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. Here, we challenge students to think critically and to channel their talents to do good in the world, inspiring in them a sense of purpose.

Northfield Mount Hermon engages the intellect, compassion, and talents of our students, empowering them to act with humanity and purpose. NMH also established, in 2010, a set of core values to guide and inspire students, faculty, and staff. They are: excellence, respect, integrity, persistence, creativity, and teamwork.

 Academics

Another factor that distinguished the schools (and continues to do so today) was the manual labor required of all students. At Northfield girls worked ten hours per week helping with meals or cleaning dormitories. At Mount Hermon, boys performed janitorial, laundry, kitchen, and farm work. The work requirement has shrunk over the years (it is now four hours per week); while students still help in the dining hall and on NMH’s farm, they also work in the library and in computer labs or give tours of campus.

 Special Highlights

Work Program. The NMH Work Program lets students participate in meaningful work and allows them to contribute to the school. Work jobs encourage students to understand the nature and value of labor, and foster a strong work ethic, whether it’s getting dirty hands cutting asparagus stalks in the springtime down at the farm, filing and photocopying in an office, or posting sports stories for an NMH blog. Got an idea for a cool work job that matches your interests? Students can suggest ideas to the program coordinator.

Rhodes Arts Center. The arts program at NMH has a profound effect on our students’ lives. Students are encouraged to participate, whether they are beginners or experienced artists, in a program that allows them the freedom to imagine, to take creative risks, and to be more fully themselves. Our arts faculty – experienced artists who recognize an inherent talent or when a student is holding back – strongly support developing artists, making them feel safe, valued, and inspired to take their dreams to the next level.
