The mission of The Loomis Chaffee School is to advance the development in spirit, mind and body of boys and girls drawn from diverse cultural and social backgrounds and to inspire in them a commitment to the best self and the common good.

The goal of the school’s academic program is the formation of skilled and discerning minds in preparation for higher education and lifelong learning. Through its courses and community life, Loomis Chaffee also educates its students for service in the nation and in today’s global civilization. In all things, the school aims to be, as its founders intended, “a shrine from which boys and girls shall take the highest inspirations for better and grander lives.”

 Academics

The Loomis Chaffee School is a renowned New England boarding school located on a 300-acre campus in Windsor, Connecticut. Chartered in 1874 by five siblings whose children all died tragically and who then selflessly determined to found a school as a gift to the children of others, Loomis Chaffee provides a superb education for boys and girls regardless of religious or political beliefs, national origin or financial resources.

Today, the student body comprises nearly 700 students representing 32 countries and 29 states. Academically challenging, the school promotes active learning and close faculty-student bonds within a respectful and civil community.

 Special Highlights

Summer Program in Spain. Loomis Chaffee’s Summer in Spain is an immersion study-travel-homestay program in Spanish for students who have at least two years of Spanish. The program features a four-week homestay in Barcelona during which time students will take courses in Spanish language and culture taught by native instructors. Numerous excursions complement the classes. Summer in Spain begins with a three-day orientation in a coastal town near Barcelona and ends with three days in Toledo and Madrid.

Writing Workshop. Writing Workshop, the most concentrated moment of Loomis Chaffee’s writing program, is part of an across-the-board emphasis on excellent writing at Loomis Chaffee. By the end of sophomore year, students are well-steeped in the process of writing. They build upon and hone these skills in junior and senior English classes, which tackle more advanced texts, require more refined arguments and encourage more creative thinking.
