Founded in 1793, Lawrence Academy is a co-educational secondary boarding and day school located in Groton, Massachusetts. The school prides itself on providing students with an opportunity to develop as individuals, while still helping them to develop skills and cognitive abilities that are important during the secondary school years. Relying on their widespread use of student-centered teaching, the Lawrence Academy faculty strives to help students discover strengths, talents, and personality traits in themselves that they did not know were there.

The school’s advising program, with its bi-weekly comment cards, redefines how students and faculty can interact on a daily basis. The Winterim programs allow students an opportunity to participate in experiential learning activities for two weeks per year. In addition to excellent academics and competitive athletic programs, including participation in ISL athletics, the school also offers signature programs that make Lawrence Academy unique among independent schools.

 Academics

The teachers at Lawrence Academy offer you a real opportunity. We want you to graduate knowing who you are. In order to discover who you are, you must figure out what the world means to you, what you think about art and literature and current world events. As you go off to college, we want you to feel confident in your intellectual strength; we want you to be an independent, creative thinker.

In order to help you achieve this goal, we have designed a curriculum (view graduation requirements) and use teaching methods that invite you to become an active participant in your education. It is difficult to remain passive in our classrooms, for, instead of memorizing and regurgitating the thinking of others, most of your time is spent looking at evidence and drawing your own conclusions, formulating and testing your own hypotheses, developing and expressing your own vision of the world. Rather than speak like a parrot, you will develop your own voice.

 Special Highlights

Combined Studies Course. CSC sections meets during two adjacent periods, and each section is taught by an English teacher and a history teacher working as a team to coordinate teaching methods, content, skills development, and homework. Thanks to a consistent emphasis on sentence structure and paragraph unity, all sophomores practice writing persuasive prose as they explore and respond to a wide variety of historical and literary texts.

Independent Immersion Program. Each year a select group of students is accepted into the Lawrence Academy Independent Immersion Program (IIP). Under the supervision of the director and a faculty mentor, students create unique programs of study which include intensive independent studies with on- and off-campus professionals, internships, and traditional course work.
