The Hotchkiss School is an independent boarding school located in Lakeville, Connecticut. Founded in 1891, the school provides an education of unsurpassed quality to nearly 600 students in grades 9 through 12, and to a small number of postgraduates. Students at Hotchkiss come from across the United States and 33 foreign countries. Graduates attend many of the most selective universities and colleges.
The Hotchkiss School strives to develop in students a lifelong love of learning, responsible citizenship, and personal integrity. We are a community based on trust, mutual respect, and compassion, and we hold all members of the community accountable for upholding these values.
Academics
The first objective of the Coordinator of International Programs is to make international students and their families feel welcome at Hotchkiss. Moving from one culture to another always involves change, from clothing and food, to academics and athletics. It may also require complex arrangements for travel and accommodation. We hope to make the transition as smooth as possible, and encourage students and parents to contact us with any questions.
Students new to Hotchkiss will find that their advisors, teachers, coaches, and corridor faculty members will be there to help them negotiate their new school. Other students, both international and from the United States, are also a great resource; indeed, one of the great appeals from Hotchkiss is the opportunity to get to know people from such a range of backgrounds.
Special Highlights
The Watson Computer Center. In a world in which rapidly changing technology is a fact of daily life, Hotchkiss keeps students on top of the technological learning curve. The Watson Computer Center is the largest of several advanced computer facilities that provide students and faculty with advanced technology for their disciplines, Internet and intranet access, and access to campus file servers and e-mail.
School Year Abroad (SYA). Our membership in the School Year Abroad program allows qualified students to increase their knowledge of another language and culture through total immersion in the life of France, Italy, Spain, Vietnam, and the People’s Republic of China. This is a unique opportunity for upper mids to leave for a year, and then seamlessly return to campus to complete their coursework at Hotchkiss, or for seniors to spend a year abroad, yet still graduate with their class.

What the school looks for in students…
“We look for well-rounded students who not only have strong grades and testing, but who like to be involved with varied hobbies (sports, music, etc.) and community service.”
