Georgetown Preparatory School is an independent, Jesuit college preparatory school for young men (grades 9 to 12). Of the 480 students, approximately 100 are residents. They come to Prep from around the U.S. and throughout the world. Founded in 1789 by America’s first Catholic bishop, Prep is the nation’s oldest Jesuit school and the only Jesuit boarding school. The mission of Georgetown Prep is to form Men of Competence, Conscience, Courage, and Compassion; Men of Faith, Men for Others.
Prep’s academically rigorous liberal arts curriculum is based in the educational philosophy of Jesuit founder, St. Ignatius Loyola: a belief in reflection, discernment, scholarly excellence, and personal responsibility, as well as the importance of being “Men for Others.” This focus on serving those less fortunate is exemplified by the active Community Service program in which all the Prep students are involved.
Academics
Prep’s academic program is challenging yet rewarding. Graduation requirements include: four years of mathematics, English and religious studies; three and a half years of social studies; two years of science, Latin and a modern language; and one year of fine arts. Prep offers 24 Advanced Placement classes. The program of study at Georgetown Prep prepares the student for success in college. The program is preparatory in the strict sense: every student who graduates will have taken all the units necessary for his admission to college. Each student takes six courses each year.
Special Highlights
Recording Studio. The Georgetown Prep recording studio opened its doors in January 2010 along with rest of the William L. George, S.J. Center, and has been in full swing ever since. Sean Gaiser, ’98, helps run the operations of the music studio. Working alongside Sean are the main studio engineers, Jarrett Nicolay and Matt Corrado. Sean, Matt, and Jarrett work as a team with students to write, record, and produce their own songs and ideas. The Georgetown Prep studio is a professional recording environment featuring current industry standard equipment and services.
Immersion Service Trips. The service program aims to develop a deep commitment to the community by forming a strong relationship with the people being served. At the end of their junior year, students are offered the opportunity to participate in one of Prep’s summer immersion trips—to New Orleans, Ivanhoe, Va., or the Dominican Republic, where they learn to make a difference in these communities while living out their responsibilities as “Men for Others.”
