At Episcopal High School, character is nurtured through traditions of honor and excellence. Our 130-acre campus, just outside of Washington, D.C., affords access to all the artistic, cultural, and scholastic resources of our nation’s capital. Episcopal offers an extraordinary boarding school experience and exceptional college preparation that emphasizes self-discovery, independence, and productivity, preparing graduates to succeed at some of the finest colleges and universities in the nation and to lead full lives with honor and purpose.

Founded on a tradition of honor and the pursuit of self-discovery, Episcopal High School engages students in a challenging college preparatory education. Episcopal strives to prepare young people to become discerning individuals with the intellectual and moral courage to lead principled lives of leadership and service to others.

 Academics

Students join the faculty in pursuing questions, not simply answers; in discovering ideas, not merely facts; and in appreciating the journey, not solely the destination. The EHS faculty offers students support, enthusiasm, and opportunities. Episcopal students graduate with a strong foundation of knowledge, skills, and responsibility that will serve them well throughout life. Episcopal High School’s course of study reflects a commitment to the liberal arts and sciences, and a dedication to prepare students for college and for life. Small classes, usually comprised of 10 to 12 students, encourage open and lively discussion.

 Special Highlights

McCain-Ravenel Center for Intellectual and Moral Courage. Established in 2018, the McCain-Ravenel Center for Moral and Intellectual Courage coordinates and supports signature initiatives at Episcopal, including the Washington Program, Global Programs, Leadership and Ethics, Outdoor Leadership, and Service and Civic Engagement. The center staff also help faculty and staff connect students with the resources of Washington and design programs that advance the mission of the School: to prepare young adults with intellectual and moral courage.

The center’s goal is to prepare students for life outside Episcopal and to help them embody the Portrait of a Graduate, much like Ravenel did for Senator John McCain. The senator once said: “Mr. Ravenel changed my life. He gave me some moorings and a compass. He used his classroom as not only a way to teach English but also to teach values and standards and morals.”

The speakers and opportunities set up by the center take students outside of Episcopal to further their education and provide them real-world experience made possible by the School’s proximity to Washington, D.C. Part of the vision of the McCain-Ravenel Center at EHS is to be the nexus of high-level partnerships for our community while connecting with unique teaching and learning moments in the national capital region and beyond.

What the school looks for in students…

“Episcopal is interested in students of strong character, who have demonstrated at their prior school(s) that they have the intelligence, curiosity, and motivation needed to succeed in our classrooms. In addition, the Admissions Committee looks for students who have the ability to contribute to the extracurricular life of the School, be it artistically or athletically.”
