Choate attracts intellectually gifted and motivated students from diverse backgrounds whose commitment to serious study is enhanced in this personally supportive and academically challenging setting. On a campus that inspires a particular sensitivity to beauty, teachers – who share genuine respect and affection for young people – impart an enthusiasm for life and for learning.

A rigorous academic curriculum with an emphasis on character formation is at the core of our school’s mission. Choate Rosemary Hall is a boarding and day secondary school of 850 talented students and 173 dedicated faculty from diverse backgrounds who genuinely enjoy living together and learning from each other. Above all, it is our sense of place that distinguishes us.

 Academics

Choate Rosemary Hall’s balanced curriculum offers students a firm grounding in the fundamentals of clear thinking and expression—with emphasis on individual development. Our six academic departments all offer traditional core courses as well as a variety of electives. While grounding students in the core of each major discipline, Choate’s academic program allows those with special talents and/or well-developed interests to specialize in an area of strength or passion.

 Special Highlights

If Music’s Your Thing… We have a Festival Chorus, Gospel Choir, male and female a cappella groups, ensembles, chamber chorus and chamber orchestra, and jazz band. You’ll find them all among our many arts extracurriculars. Just in the past two years, our chorus and orchestra have toured throughout Europe and the chamber orchestra performed at a Christmas celebration at The White House.

Capstone Project. Finish your Choate career with a Capstone project. Seniors may create an individualized program, which typically includes two related courses in both the fall and winter terms and an independent project (the “capstone”) in the spring term. Some recent capstones include international economics, historical trends in American foreign policy, China/U.S. Relations and creative writing.
