Cheshire Academy’s history stretches back to 1794. Since its inception, the school has enjoyed a legacy of freedom, acceptance, and diversity. Many great men and women, including Chester Bowles, Admiral Andrew Foote, Fred Friendly, Roberto Goizueta, Rockwell Kent, J.P. Morgan, Angela Robinson, Francis X. Shields, James Van Der Beek, Gideon Welles, and Joseph Wheeler got their start here.
Cheshire Academy is a community within a community, close to large cities, yet suburban enough that students feel comfortable on- and off-campus. What discoveries await a student here? There are as many answers to that question as there are students, because education that inspires the individual is our way of life. Students, teachers, coaches, and parents combine their diverse talents to create a learning and living environment that honors the differences in all of us. Our history includes women and men who changed the course of world events because they stood up for who they are, and we’re proud they learned to do that here. While our past makes us one of the nation’s oldest schools, our curriculum encourages intellectual and ethical maturity for today’s global society.
Academics
Cheshire Academy prepares thoughtful, active graduates who embrace both their membership and potential in the global community. We invite students from diverse backgrounds to engage in learning the skills of critical thinking, communication, cooperation, and creative problem solving within a college-preparatory curriculum. We develop students’ appreciation for their leadership potential and expect responsible community membership as an essential part of the journey to adulthood. We advocate the passionate pursuit of personal goals while fostering respect and compassion for self, for others, and for the environment.
Special Highlights
International Baccalaureate Program. In June 2011, Cheshire Academy was designated as an International Baccalaureate® World School. As a faculty, we found ourselves eager to embrace a curriculum so thoughtfully rooted in five fundamental premises. The educators who founded the IB, nearly half a century ago emphasized the importance of teaching writing across the curriculum. These fundamental tenets speak to what we assert as core values of a Cheshire education.
The Community and the Arts. With our campus located just 20 minutes away from both New Haven and Hartford, Cheshire Academy students have an array of opportunities to catch performances and exhibits outside of the community. Class field trips and weekend evenings out might include a trip to the following venues: Broadway Theater Works, The Bushnell, Hartford Stage, Shubert Theater, The Wadsworth Atheneum, Yale Repertory Theater, Yale University Art Gallery, and Yale Center for British Art.
