Founded in 1915 and still guided by lay Roman Catholics, Canterbury is a college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9 to 12. The School prides itself on creating a community based on its Five Values – Honesty, Respect, Compassion, Spirituality, and Self Reliance – where students and faculty forge lasting bonds and every student experiences a broad and challenging program in a small school setting.
The School’s educational environment fosters academic rigor, athletic development, artistic enrichment, and spiritual growth and strives to ensure a superior experience that prepares students for leading colleges and universities and for life.
Academics
The academic program at Canterbury prepares students for active intellectual work in a changing world. The curriculum pursues broad and deep exposure across disciplines, and is designed to create a fertile academic environment, inculcate a love of learning, and prepare students to become contributing citizens and moral leaders. Canterbury offers a college preparatory program of more than 115 courses, including 21 AP courses and 13 Honors sections. Our dozens of electives are most often the result of a department member’s special interest.
Special Highlights
Theatre. Theatre at Canterbury is an artistic experience that allows students to explore their innate creativity and to express it. The fall Shakespeare production gives students a strong classical training experience. The training is intensified by the entire school studying the play in their English classes. Student actors visit classes helping others understand the complexities of Shakespeare. The School then comes together to watch the final production.
Field Trips. The Visual Arts department takes students on field trips each semester. We have visited New York museums, Storm King Sculpture Park, The Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, Dia:Beacon in Beacon, NY, and the British Museum in New Haven among others.
