Brimmer and May is a PreK-12 co-educational day school that upholds high academic standards while implementing innovative ideas. Brimmer and May enjoys a 135-year history. The Brimmer School was founded in 1887 and the May School in 1880. In 1939, these two well-known Boston schools merged. In 1954, Brimmer and May moved to its current location, three miles west of Boston in Chestnut Hill. We develop life-long learners who are informed, engaged, and ethical citizens and leaders in our diverse world. Guiding Principles that define Brimmer and May: Inspired to Learn: We foster active learning and challenge students to think and work independently and collaboratively to become confident problem solvers and critical thinkers.

Academics

Brimmer’s teachers, across all divisions and disciplines, work closely together and find opportunities to collaborate. Because of this, our students learn to work well in teams and to think creatively and analytically about complex topics, particularly in the STEAM fields of study. We encourage students to speak publicly, demonstrate their knowledge, and use their imaginations to produce innovative work. Of equal importance is our value-centered culture, which helps our students become honest, respectful, responsible, and kind citizens.

Special Highlights

Scholars Society. The Scholars Society is made up of 11th and 12th grade students who have maintained a high academic average and are actively involved in the life of Brimmer. Membership is by application, and members are determined by a vote of the Scholars Committee, which is comprised of teachers and administrators.

Wellness Program. Upper School students participate in wellness programs geared to support their social, emotional, and physical well-being. We strive to develop students who will go on to be successful in the world and educate them in areas that will allow them to be prepared to make informed decisions when faced with challenging situations. Each grade has week-long workshops in either the area of sex education or stress management and substance use and abuse. When possible we try to offer a parent workshop as well.
