Brown University is a private Ivy League research university in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. It is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the US, founded in 1764. The university is home to the oldest applied mathematics program in the country and oldest engineering program in the Ivy League. Brown’s main campus is in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, and the university is surrounded by a concentration of Colonial-era buildings. Brown’s core, historic campus is defined by three greens: the Front or Quiet Green, the Middle or College Green, and the Ruth J. Simmons Quadrangle (historically known as Lincoln Field). The university’s campus is contiguous with that of the Rhode Island School of Design, which is located immediately to Brown’s west, along the slope of College Hill.
