Yale University is a private institution that was founded in 1701. Its setting is city, and the campus size is 373 acres. Yale is known for its excellent drama and music programs, which reach outside the classroom with student organizations such as the Yale Whiffenpoofs, a famous a cappella group, and the Yale Dramatic Association. The Yale Bulldogs compete in the Ivy League and are well known for their rivalry with Harvard. Students are assigned to live in one of 14 residential colleges during their time at Yale. Each college has a head and dean who live in the college and eat with students in the dining halls. Cultural centers provide a space for students to build a sense of cultural identity on campus.

Academics

Yale is made up of the College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and 13 professional schools. Included in the professional schools are the top-ranked Law School and highly ranked School of Management, School of Medicine, School of Art and School of Nursing. The School of Drama, School of the Environment, and Divinity School also have well-regarded graduate programs. The student-faculty ratio at Yale University is 6:1, and the school has 72.1% of its classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Economics, History, Political Science & Government, and Liberal Arts & Humanities.

Special Highlights

Sterling Memorial Library. In the heart of central campus, Sterling is Yale’s largest library and one of the University’s most iconic buildings. Completed in 1930, it houses more than 2.5 million volumes, with a focus on humanities and area studies, on 14 floors of book stacks. The library is built in the Collegiate Gothic style to resemble a European cathedral. The main entrance, known as the Nave, has a 60-foot ceiling, cloisters, clerestory windows, side chapels, and a circulation desk altar. There are also 3,300 stained-glass windows throughout the building. In addition to reading rooms and library departments, Sterling encompasses Gilmore Music Library, Manuscripts and Archives, the Franke Family Digital Humanities Lab, the Yale Film Archive, and Hanke Exhibition Gallery.

Evans Hall. The 225,000-square-foot Evans Hall is the home of the Yale School of Management. With its striking modern design, glass facade, and large courtyard, Evans Hall has taken its place among the architectural landmarks that distinguish the Yale campus. The design of Evans Hall is directly inspired by the need for a teaching and learning environment to support the school’s integrated MBA curriculum. The campus features 16 classrooms of varying layouts and sizes, plus breakout rooms, lounges, the library, and other common spaces.

School Mission & Unique Qualities

Yale is committed to improving the world today and for future generations through outstanding research and scholarship, education, preservation, and practice. The Commencement ceremony on Old Campus is a joyous tradition, during which all university degrees are formally conferred. Class Day takes place on Old Campus on the Sunday before Commencement and includes the awarding of academic, artistic, and athletic prizes; the celebration of undergraduates; and an address by a notable speaker. The Yale Record is the oldest college humor magazine in the nation. Dwight Hall is an independent umbrella organization that fosters student service and activism in the New Haven community and beyond.
