The University of Waterloo is a public research university located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The main campus sits on 404 hectares (998 acres) of land adjacent to uptown Waterloo and Waterloo Park. The university also operates three satellite campuses and four affiliated university colleges. With over 50,000 university and college students in the surrounding community, there’s a vast number of shops and restaurants geared to students. Located 110 km west of Toronto, the city of Waterloo is home to residents from 200 cultural backgrounds. UW is home to 200+ undergraduate and graduate programs in business, health, engineering, math, science, social sciences, humanities, the environment, and more. Each of the university’s six faculties has a student society which represent and provide services for the students, including online exam banks, resume critiques, and technical skills workshops. Some student societies also operate a student deal discount program and one to two shops selling coffee and food at low prices.

Academics

Recognized as one of Canada’s top innovation universities, the University of Waterloo is a member of the U15, a group of research-intensive universities in Canada. The university is organized into six faculties, which operate a combined total of 13 schools and over 50 academic departments. Waterloo partners with other institutions to jointly operating a graduate program. The Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA) is a graduate school and research centre operated in partnership with the Centre for International Governance Innovation and Wilfrid Laurier University. The Perimeter’s Scholar International program functions within the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, where graduates receive an MS from Waterloo. The university also offers credit-bearing study abroad through student exchange and international internship programs. The student-faculty ratio at University of Waterloo is 7:1. Popular majors include Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Environment & Business.

Special Highlights

Global Business & Digital Arts. Global Business and Digital Arts (GBDA) is Canada’s first undergraduate program to combine creativity, technology, and business in one unique degree. With the integration of hands-on projects with industry partners, access to the latest digital technologies, and co-op work terms, you have a university experience you won’t find anywhere else but the Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business at the University of Waterloo. We offer students a rich and stimulating program where they will learn to manage design projects from start to delivery, developing abilities that range from critical conceptualization and technical troubleshooting, to cross-cultural communication and global marketing.

Computational Mathematics. Computational Mathematics at the University of Waterloo is an interdisciplinary research and education centre that combines our globally recognized expertise in Mathematics, Statistics, Optimization, and Computer Science and applies it to challenging computational problems in the real world. The centre oversees undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Computational Mathematics and is a hub for research and industrial collaboration. About 80 Faculty Affiliates from all five academic units of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics participate in the centre. In a time of big data and ever-increasing computer power, Computational Mathematics methods are key drivers of progress and innovation in many areas that include: Finance, Banking and Insurance, Data Science and Machine Learning, Biology and Medicine, Weather and Climate, Fundamental and Applied Research, and numerous other areas of Science, Engineering, Industry and Government. Our co-op students and graduates hold among the most interesting and rewarding high-end technology jobs.
