University of Miami is a private institution that was founded in 1925. Located on a 239-acre campus in a suburban area of Southern Florida, the University of Miami has an ideal location for students who love the outdoors. With popular spots like South Beach, the Florida Keys, and Everglades National Park nearby, students have plenty of opportunities for water sports, hiking and sunbathing. Downtown Miami, also near to the school, is a thriving sports and cultural center. Students can choose from more than 250 clubs and organizations to join. Freshmen are required to live on campus and can live in one of the school’s five residential colleges. The communities, modeled after housing at England’s Oxford and Cambridge universities, combine living and learning with group meals, poetry readings, sports and more. The University is known as a research institution, and research opportunities begin at the undergraduate level.
Academics
The University’s 12 schools and colleges provide undergraduate and graduate students with access to more than 100 majors and programs. Undergraduates complete their general education requirements through the Cognates Program, which allows them to tailor their academic journey across disciplines. The University of Miami is one of only two private institutions established in the 20th century invited to join the esteemed Association of American Universities (AAU), which represents the top 3 percent of four-year institutions in the United States. In addition to its Coral Gables Campus, the University also operates the Medical Campus in Downtown Miami, which includes the Miller School of Medicine and University of Miami Health System hospitals and clinics, and the Marine Campus on Virginia Key. The student-faculty ratio at University of Miami is 13:1, and the school has 52% of its classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Finance, Nursing, and Psychology.

The John C. Gifford Arboretum, a campus arboretum and botanical garden, is located on the northwest corner of the main Coral Gables campus. The Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center at the University of Miami’s School of Architecture holds periodic architecture and design exhibitions.

Student Reviews…
“My experience at UM has overall been great! There are a lot of great professors and there is a very welcoming environment on campus. Most of my class sizes were small and very discussion based which I find best for learning. Anyone can really find their place here. Campus is beautiful.”
