The University of Manitoba is the largest post-secondary university in the province. Winnipeg is the capital city of Manitoba, located in the center of Canada. Home to a diverse population of nearly one million people, the city and metropolitan area are a vibrant hub of industry and culture. UM is home to two main campuses, Fort Garry and Bannatyne, and multiple satellite campuses across the province and research locations around the world. The campuses are inclusive and accessible, and feature traditional and contemporary architecture, state-of-the-art facilities, and expansive green space. Cradled in a bow of the Red River in a treed, green setting in south Winnipeg 20 minutes from the city center, the historic Fort Garry campus encompasses roughly 280 hectares (692 acres). It features more than 90 major buildings host a range of world-class facilities including four colleges, laboratories, teaching and learning spaces, recreation facilities, libraries, and residences with open spaces plus an interwoven network of streets, pedestrian pathways, and plazas. Bannatyne, UM’s downtown campus, is a vibrant urban community adjacent to the Health Sciences Centre.

Academics

University of Manitoba is a member of the U15 group of research-intensive universities, and is home to more than 50 research centers, institutes, and shared facilities. UM includes 13 faculties, four schools, and nine colleges. It offers 250+ programs of study comprised of 100+ undergraduate and nearly 150 graduate programs. Most freshmen take University 1 (U1), a unique approach to entry-level studies that allows students to take courses required for their chosen program while providing exposure to several other disciplines. UM has 100+ flexible learning opportunities including co-op and internships, immersive learning, exchange programs, as well as bridge programs. The student-faculty ratio at University of Manitoba is 28:1. Popular majors include Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Finance, and Business Administration.

Special Highlights

Intercultural Experience. The International Centre’s Intercultural Experience programming provides opportunities for international and domestic students alike to gain skills, learn across cultural boundaries and build relationships with their peers. The Welcome Mentors program pairs new international students with experienced UM students to provide one-on-one intercultural and personal support and connect to academic resources. Available to all UM students, the Intercultural Leaders program enhances students’ public speaking, leadership, cultural awareness, and communication skills during eight interactive group sessions and workshops. The Language Exchange program connects people who speak different languages but share similar interests. The partners then meet each week to practice each other’s languages and learn about each other’s cultures in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Centre for Creative Writing & Oral Culture (CCWOC). The Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture (CCWOC) at the University of Manitoba is a hub for creativity and a place to learn about and celebrate the transformative potential of creative writing and storytelling. CCWOC provides support for established and emerging storytellers and writers within and beyond the university community, aiming to empower people from diverse backgrounds to develop skills and create stories. The Writer/Storyteller-in-Residence program brings together established and emerging writers and storytellers, offering workshops, one-on-one consultations, and public events. The program, which has been running for over 15 years, is open to UM students, staff, and alumni as well as to the wider community.

“This is a typical university with all the services required by students. Though it is a great place for learning, you quickly learn that university is also a business. I benefitted from the classes and learned a good number of lessons. People were generally friendly. Most buildings have not received renovations in many years, and campus security is questionable at times of need.”
