The University of Guelph is one of Canada’s top comprehensive and research-intensive universities. It is also known as Canada’s Food University. Established in 1964, the University enjoys a reputation for innovation and excellence dating back more than 150 years to its founding colleges: Ontario Veterinary College, Ontario Agricultural College and Macdonald Institute. The main campus covers 412 acres including Guelph Arboretum University and a science park. Guelph is one of Ontario’s fastest growing, best run cities. Academics

The University’s seven colleges conduct cutting-edge teaching and research across a range of disciplines in the physical and life sciences, business, arts, social sciences, and agricultural and veterinary sciences. U of G offers 75+ majors and 60+ minors, providing countless pathways for students to build a degree. According to the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research, the University’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program has Canada’s highest research index. The University offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. It offers 94 undergraduate degrees, 48 graduate programs, and six associate degrees in many different disciplines. The student-faculty ratio at University of Guelph is 11:1. Special Highlights

Three Campuses. The University of Guelph (U of G) is home to three distinct campuses, each offering unique academic experiences. The main campus, located in the heart of Guelph, Ont., is the university’s central hub. In Toronto, the University of Guelph-Humber, offered in collaboration with Humber College it combines academic and hands-on learning, allowing students to earn both a university degree and a college diploma. In southwestern Ontario, the Ridgetown Campus is a leader in applied agriculture, animal sciences, and environmental sciences. Each U of G campus blends historical and modern architecture with cutting-edge technology.

College Royal. College Royal is the largest university open house event of its kind in North America. Each March, the University of Guelph opens its doors to the general public in a campus-wide open house that attracts thousands of visitors every year. For students, staff, and alumni, College Royal is also a 12-day long event that includes popular events like Kick-Off Pub, Super Thursday, Livestock Shows, Square Dancing, the College Royal Ball, and much, much more. College Royal is a 100% student run and organized event. Whether you are a member of the general public curious to see what goes on at the “University on the hill,” or a student looking to become involved, everyone is welcome.

School Mission & Unique Qualities

The University is named after the city. Guelph comes from the Italian Guelfo and the Bavarian-Germanic Welf also known as “Guelf.” It is a reference to the reigning British monarch at the time Guelph was founded, King George IV. U of G’s Science Complex is North America’s largest integrated science teaching and research facility. Tri-University Group of Libraries (TUG) is a part of collaboration between the Guelph, Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University libraries. The MacDonald Stewart Art Center is a public gallery and sculpture park that houses mixed media collection, paintings, photographs, prints and drawings, sculptures, jewelries, glasses, metalwork, silverwork and goldwork, textiles and tapestries. Students can find various Living Learning Centers in the university campus: Arts House, International House, ECO House, La Maison Française, English Learning House, and Leadership House.
