The University of Calgary is a leading Canadian university located in the nation’s most enterprising city. The university features four campuses across the Calgary, Alberta region and a fifth location in Doha, Qatar. The main campus is located in the northwest quadrant of the city near the Bow River and the smaller south campus is located in the city centre. The main campus houses most of the research facilities and comprises approximately 200 hectares (490 acres), mixing old and new buildings with green spaces and underground tunnels that help students escape cold winters. UCalgary enrolls roughly 37,000 students in undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. Two-thirds of the university’s 220,000 alumni live and work in the Calgary area. The University of Calgary is a young university in a dynamic city. Located in the country’s energy capital, the school has long been a leader in energy and engineering. But it’s also attuned to the province’s wider needs, including economic diversification, environmental stewardship, and healthy communities.

Academics

Ranked one of the top ten research universities in Canada, the University of Calgary is a member of the U15 and features more than 80 research institutes and centres across its campuses working to address society’s most persistent and emerging challenges. The university has 14 faculties offering more than 250 academic programs. In addition to the faculties of Arts, Science, Kinesiology, and Graduate Studies, professional schools include the Haskayne School of Business, the Schulich School of Engineering, the Cumming School of Medicine, the Faculty of Law, the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape, the Werklund School of Education, the Faculty of Social Work, the Faculty of Nursing, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The student-faculty ratio at University of Calgary is 6:1. Popular majors include Computer Science, Psychology, Computational Science, and Economics.

Special Highlights

Student Success Centre. The University of Calgary’s Student Success Centre previously launched a first-of-its-kind student co-curricular record to acknowledge the significance of external and experiential learning. The official university document can be coupled with a student’s academic transcript and recognizes out-of-classroom experiences that are still connected to the university. The Student Success Centre offers programs and services to support students in creating: Academic Success, Personal Success, and Career Success. The SSC offers Orientation Programs, Personalized Career Planning Sessions, Career and Life Workshops, Leadership Programs, the First-Year Experience Program, the Senior-Year Experience Program, Arts & Science Program Advising, Learning Support Services, and Writing Support Services.

Global Learning. The University of Calgary’s Study Abroad program offers students the opportunity to take courses internationally through exchanges, group study programs, and experiential learning placements. Students can study for a term, a summer, or a full academic year in over 40 countries while earning credit toward their UCalgary degree. By participating, students will gain valuable intercultural communication skills, global awareness, and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives. The experience fosters personal growth, academic enrichment, and career development in an increasingly globalized world. There are a wide range of opportunities and available year-round and include locations throughout the world including Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa, South America, and others. Students can apply to study abroad as long as they’re in good academic standing and will have completed at least 10 university courses before traveling.

School Mission & Unique Qualities

The University of Calgary is expected to achieve focused outcomes that support and encourage engagement, economic, social, and cultural prosperity, and are valuable to all Albertans. Each spring, the university updates and submits its Comprehensive Institutional Plan (CIP), a three-year, integrated planning document that satisfies governmental requirements. The Ahead of Tomorrow Strategic Plan shapes the journey toward 2030, considered through long-term, foundational commitments to: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility; Indigenous Engagement; Mental Health; Global Engagement; and Sustainability. As a campus tradition, the university’s UCalgaryStrong Festival is an annual end-of-term celebration, which has acted as an alternative to the Bermuda Shorts Day event following its discontinuation. It is considered a safe and alcohol-free way for the entire community to enjoy the semester coming to an end, and often includes live music, games, and food selections.
