Syracuse University is a private institution that was founded in 1870. The school sits on a 721-acre campus at University Hill, above the sprawling city of Syracuse in central New York State. With about 100 inches of snowfall each year, the winters at Syracuse University give students plenty of opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding on nearby mountains. On campus, there are more than 300 student organizations. Freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus. The free Connective Corridor bus shuttles transport students between campus and downtown Syracuse, where annual celebrations include a Winterfest and a Jazz Fest. Syracuse offers undergraduates a variety of study abroad opportunities, including through the school’s overseas centers and programs with partner institutions. Syracuse University’s five award-winning study abroad centers and international programs in 60 countries allow students to gain global perspectives that last a lifetime.
Academics
Syracuse University has 13 schools and colleges, offering more than 200 customizable majors and more than 100 minors. Interdisciplinary study opportunities allow students to expand their academic focus and career preparedness. Syracuse is classified among R1 Doctoral Universities—Very High Research Activities. The school has established some 30 research centers and institutes that focus research, often across disciplines, in a variety of areas. The student-faculty ratio at Syracuse University is 15:1, and the school has 64% of classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Information Science, Psychology, Finance, Economics, and Marketing.
Special Highlights
E.S. Bird Library. Syracuse University’s main library is the E.S. Bird Library, known as one of the hundred largest libraries in the country. The historic Carnegie Library houses Science and Technology collection, additionally serving as a reading room. There are also several departmental libraries on campus. Many of the landmarks in the history of recorded communication between people are in the university’s Special Collections Research Center, from cuneiform tablets and papyri to several codices dating from the 11th century to the invention of printing. The collection also includes works by Galileo, Luther, John Calvin, Voltaire, Isaac Newton, Descartes, Francis Bacon, Samuel Johnson, Thomas Hobbes, and Goethe. Other collections of note include Rudyard Kipling first editions and an original second leaf of the Gutenberg Bible.
Student Life: Media. CitrusTV is the university’s entirely student-run television studio and one of the largest student-run TV studios in the country, with over 300 active members. There are also multiple student-run magazines and other print publications, including: The Daily Orange, Student Voice, Perception, Jerk Magazine, What the Health, 360, Baked Magazine, The Out Crowd, and Equal Time. The Daily Orange, a fully independent student newspaper published since 1903, is free and published daily during the Syracuse University academic year. It is often ranked among the best student newspapers in the US. WAER, a radio station owned by the University, features jazz music, NPR, and Syracuse Orange play-by-play programming around the clock. It. WJPZ-FM and WERW are independent student-run radio stations and feature a variety of news and entertainment programming.
School Mission & Unique Qualities
Syracuse University is a private, student-focused research university fueled by 150+ years of tradition, academic distinction and a spirit of discovery. It offers students hands-on opportunities for exploration, invention and discovery through a dedicated Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement. The large campus features an eclectic mix of architecture, ranging from nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival to contemporary buildings. The center of campus, with its grass quadrangle, landscaped walkways, and outdoor sculptures, offers student amenities of a traditional college experience. Few schools are associated with color as strongly as Syracuse. A brilliant shade of orange is tied into campus life, manifesting itself in the many student media outlets. The school’s sports teams are known simply as Orange. The football team plays in Carrier Dome, famed as the only domed stadium in the Northeast.
