Syracuse University is a private institution that was founded in 1870. The school’s campus size is 721 acres and sits on University Hill, above the sprawling city of Syracuse in central New York state. With about 100 inches of snowfall each year, winters at Syracuse give students opportunities for skiing, snowboarding and sledding on nearby mountains. On campus, there are more than 300 student organizations. The free Connective Corridor bus shuttles transport students between campus and downtown Syracuse, where annual celebrations include a Winterfest and a Jazz Fest.

Academics

Syracuse features more than 200 majors and 100 minors offered through 13 schools and colleges and 18 online degree programs. Interdisciplinary study opportunities allow students to expand their academic focus and career preparedness. As a Carnegie classification Research 1 institution, Syracuse offers students hands-on opportunities for exploration, invention and discovery through a dedicated Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement. The student-faculty ratio is 15:1, and the school has 57% of classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Information Science, Psychology, Finance, Economics, and Marketing.

Special Highlights

Connective Corridor. The Corridor creates a connection between the City and University, making it easier and more feasible for students to access many great downtown activities. Urban planning, art, and architecture are combined with smart growth and sustainability plans. A network of “green streets” with bike and pedestrian paths link University Hill and downtown business and residential districts.

Study Abroad. Our students seek opportunities to understand different cultures and extend the classroom to enrich their education. They also know that Syracuse University has one of the longest running—and most highly ranked—study abroad programs in the nation. You can choose from over 100 different programs within 60 countries, including Florence, Italy, Strasbourg, France, and Santiago, Chile, and engage in internships, Signature Seminars, language study, homestay, and community engagement projects.

School Mission & Unique Qualities

Few schools are associated with a color as strongly as Syracuse University. A brilliant shade of orange is tied into campus life, manifesting itself in student media outlets such as The Daily Orange, the student-run newspaper, and CitrusTV, the television studio. The school’s sports teams are known simply as Orange and compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference, cheered on by school mascot Otto the Orange. The football team plays in Carrier Dome, famed as the only domed stadium in the Northeast.
