Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1934, Salve Regina University is a private university that offers students a transformative, values-based education rooted in the liberal arts tradition. A previous recipient of “Most Beautiful Colleges in America” award, Salve Regina’s 80-acre coastal campus is located in historic Newport, Rhode Island bordering the Newport Cliff Walk, and is less than two hours from Boston. Ochre Court, built in the mid-1890s, serves as the University’s central administration building. Concerts, lectures, and special functions are held in the ballrooms on the ground floor. Research options and internships are available in every academic program and students can add a second field of study or study abroad through one of the global programs. Salve Regina is known for faculty mentorship, and reputed for among the best undergraduate teaching in the region. There are more than 70 student organizations, performance groups, campus publications, honor societies, athletic teams, and community service opportunities. Students study and live in historic mansions, yet receive an education that prepares them for modern careers and a lifetime of serving their communities.
Academics
Salve Regina University offers associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. With nearly 50 undergraduate majors and 10 master’s degree programs, along with combined bachelor’s/master’s programs, there are abundant opportunities for students to chart their own paths over the long term. Throughout the journey, expert faculty will inspire students to seek new experiences through career exploration, mentorship, and experiential learning. The University also has four PhD programs in behavior analysis, humanities, international relations, and nursing. All of Salve Regina’s degree programs are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The student-faculty ratio at Salve Regina is 13:1, and the school has 50% of its classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Nursing, Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Administration, Psychology, and Marketing.
Special Highlights
Arboretum at Salve Regina. Salve Regina’s campus has been recognized as a Level II arboretum. The University’s acreage, which features mostly mature and exotic trees, was originally designed by notable landscape architects such as the Olmsted brothers. The ongoing professional care to preserve and protect its 1,200 trees of more than 100 different species, and conservation of this historic landscape distinguishes Salve Regina among its liberal arts peers. With much of the campus publicly accessible, guests are welcome to explore the grounds following curated pathways such as the Wakehurst walking tour to experience the diversity of species that comprise the University’s grounds.
Multicultural Programs. The Office of Multicultural Programs and Retention facilitates the engagement of differences in a comprehensive manner that allows students, faculty and staff to learn from one another and to recognize the diversity of perspectives, experiences, and cultures that exist within the University community, the surrounding community, and the nation. Multicultural Education Week is designed to celebrate diverse backgrounds and spark conversations around important topics. Highlights include: featured speakers, panel discussions, a pop-up coffeehouse, and a closing festival.
