Academics

Queen’s University is a member of the U15 group of research-intensive universities and a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. Queen’s hosts more than 20 specialized research centers and institutes where scholars collaborate with experts from around the world to address complex local and global issues. The university is organized into several faculties and schools. These include the Arts and Sciences, Education, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Health Sciences, Law, the School of Public Policy, and Smith School of Business. Many of these faculties and schools are further organized into smaller departments and divisions. Queen’s offers over 170 disciplines of study across 53 departments. The student-faculty ratio at Queen’s University is 19:1. Popular majors include Business, Engineering, Health Sciences, and Policy Studies.

Special Highlights

Queen’s University International Centre (QUIC). The Queen’s University International Centre (QUIC) is committed to helping build diverse and inclusive communities for Queen’s students, staff, and faculty. We provide a great space in the heart of campus to support international students transitioning to Queen’s, with services and programs to encourage a successful student experience. Academic Programs help students develop confidence in their communication skills through partnered programming with Student Academic Success Services, including weekly Write It and Speak Up workshops; International Student Advisors (ISAs) can assist with the transition of studying at Queen’s and living in Kingston; the World Link Program offers in-person and online social activities and events that provide opportunities for students to connect, meet people, have fun, and build community. Students may also request a workshop based on their specific needs and interests.

Ingenuity Labs Research Institute. The Ingenuity Labs Research Institute is a collaborative research initiative focused on creating intelligent systems and robotic machines that enhance human productivity, safety, performance, and quality of life. Its researchers are interdisciplinary experts in fields from artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cyber-human systems, to robot control, smart sensors, and mechatronic devices. The Institute is housed in Mitchell Hall with a dedicated 12,000 sq. ft. research space, including open spaces for experiments and state-of-the-art fabrication facilities. Ingenuity Labs features an interactive and multi-disciplinary research environment where students and faculty from diverse backgrounds meet and collaborate. Research opportunities exist to participate in hands-on research projects in the application of artificial intelligence and robotics in all areas of engineering and computer science.

“Good classes with good teachers and nice facilities. The campus gives off modern but Victorian style architecture, and you’re also by the pier so it’s perfect for the summer months. Everyone is very supportive and outgoing, and there’s a lot of school spirit. I think Queen’s could improve by branching out to international students to increase the diversity of each degree.”
