Northeastern University is a private institution that was founded in 1898. The school’s campus is spread out across 73 acres in the venerable college town of Boston. The city, home to myriad colleges, is steeped in American history and full of activities for students. Northeastern has its own stop on Boston’s subway system, commonly called the “T”. Outside of the classroom, there are more than 400 clubs and organizations for students to get involved in. Freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus. Northeastern’s educational model is like no other. Integrating rigorous classroom learning with real-world experiences, Northeastern students study, work, research, and serve on seven continents. Northeastern’s signature experiential program, cooperative education (co-op) enables students, starting as early as their second year, to integrate periods of classroom study with up to three six-month periods of full-time employment. Undergraduates and graduates alike can get involved in research, and many present projects in the annual Research, Innovation and Scholarship Expo.
Academics
Northeastern is a large, highly residential university which comprises nine schools, including the Northeastern University School of Law. Northeastern offers undergraduate and graduate programs, and most undergraduates participate in a cooperative education program. Northeastern is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education and is a member of the Boston Consortium for Higher Education. It is classified among R1 Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activities. Its innovative programs encompass over 175+ majors, 120 combined majors, and a variety of concentrations, honors, pre-professional, and study-abroad programs. The student-faculty ratio at Northeastern University is 16:1, and the school has 66% of classes with fewer than 20 students. “I love the school! South end is a great place to go to college. You have access to all of Boston area. Academically, it’s difficult or easy depending on your major; it’s pretty simple to change majors. Professors are pretty good. Honors dorms are nice, but not the other freshmen dorms.”
