Harvard University is a private mid-sized institution that was founded in 1636, located in an urban setting just outside of Boston in Cambridge, Massachusetts on a campus of 5,076 acres. The university is made up of 13 schools and institutes, including the top-ranked Business School and Medical School. Harvard’s athletic teams compete in the Ivy League, with an annual football matchup against rival Yale. Life in the Yard. Life in the Yard provides several opportunities for first-years to interact with peers, upper-class students, faculty, and university staff. First-Year Intramurals offer a chance for students to bond with other freshmen, learn a new sport, and compete to win the Yard Trophy. The First Year FUNd program provides an opportunity to plan social or cultural events. Through specially designed First-Year Experience programs, students learn about college personal development. Each term, students may invite a faculty member to the traditional First-Year Faculty Dinner.

Harvard is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Eight U.S. presidents graduated from Harvard College, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. Harvard’s extensive library system houses the oldest collection in the U.S. and the largest private collection in the world. Harvard’s museums house more than 28 million works of art, artifacts, materials, and instruments. These museums rank alongside some of the greatest in the world and they are open to the public.
