Founded in 1821, Amherst College is widely regarded as one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation, enrolling a diverse group of approximately 1,800 young men and women. It’s located is suburban with a college’s scenic 1,000-acre campus near the center of the Town of Amherst. The college is a member of the Five Colleges, a consortium with nearby Smith, Mount Holyoke and Hampshire Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Students may take courses at any of the colleges, and the schools’ proximity adds to Amherst’s rich social and extracurricular life.

Academics

Amherst features a student-faculty ratio of 7:1 and more than 70% of classes have fewer than 20 students. Students participate in sophisticated research, making use of state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. Amherst’s open curriculum allows students to chart an individual course through more than 800 courses offered at the college; there are no distribution requirements. Honors work is encouraged and in recent years has been undertaken by nearly half of the graduating class. Popular majors include Economics, Research and Experimental Psychology, and Mathematics.

Wall Street Journal Online. In a world where education and career opportunities are more competitive than ever, the need for you to obtain broader perspectives on a variety of global business issues is a necessity. This is why Amherst College has joined The Wall Street Journal in a collaboration that will provide students and faculty full access to the Journal. The Journal provides career advice and ties real-world examples into what you learn, giving you the opportunity to enhance your educational experience and stay ahead.

Museums & Galleries. Amherst is home three world-renowned museums that annually welcome more than 70,000 visitors. Our campus galleries display works by influential Russian artists and contemporary art by student, faculty, alumni and visiting artists. The Mead houses Amherst College’s extensive art collection, and offers free admission. Emily Dickinson Museum offers guided tours and events that showcase Dickinson’s revolutionary poetic voice. One of New England’s largest natural history museums, the Beneski boasts three floors of exhibits with more than 1,700 specimens on display, and tens of thousands available for research.
