Colleges Lewis & Clark College
Lewis & Clark College
Lewis & Clark is a small, private college located in Portland that’s situated beyond the central part of the city, creating more of a spacious environment. Located just six miles from downtown, L&C offers access to internship and employment opportunities that you can explore with help from our Career Center and Bates Center for Entrepreneurship. We uphold the Liberal Arts tradition: to test their boundaries through ongoing exploration, and to hand over to future generations the tools and discoveries of this quest. By these means we pursue the aims of all liberal learning: to seek knowledge for its own sake and to prepare for civic leadership.
Entering first-year students benefit from our 4-5-6 Commitment, in which professors and academic advisors guide you to a BA in four years, or we pay for your ninth semester. If you want to stay for five years, we have a pathway to our Graduate School of Teaching and Counseling that will get you an MAT + licensure in five years. Or in six years, you can earn your BA and a JD from our School of Law. The student-faculty ratio is 12:1, and 67% of classes have fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include Psychology, Biological Sciences, International Relations and Affairs, English Language and Literature, and Sociology.
New Student Orientation. During NSO, students become familiar with academic and co-curricular life at Lewis & Clark. Our programs and events help make the transition to college as seamless as possible by introducing students to the campus environment, meeting classmates, faculty and staff, and equipping new “Pioneers” with the tools and resources necessary for success. College Outdoors program offers new students the chance to go on a trip before orientation starts, such as backpacking in the Wallowa mountains, rafting on the Deschutes river, and surfing on the Oregon Coast.
The Pioneer Log. The Pioneer Log, Lewis & Clark’s biweekly student newspaper, reports campus and community activities and news of interest to students, faculty, and staff. The paper has opportunities on its staff for students interested in writing, photography, graphic design, art, editing, business, advertising, and promotion. Students may begin working for The Pioneer Log at any time during their enrollment at Lewis & Clark.
School Mission & Unique Qualities
Our students represent the next generation of global thinkers and leaders, unafraid to discard conventional thinking, civic complacency, and outmoded preconceptions. Yet they value what Lewis & Clark offers: an education built from the time-tested elements of careful study, original research, and spirited debate. So what makes us unique? The inspiring beauty of our natural setting, on 137 wooded acres in Portland’s southwest hills; our rich history and our diverse, multicultural community; our commitment to interdisciplinary academic learning, as well as community engagement in Portland and around the world.
“Lewis & Clark has been a wonderful experience. The faculty is very hands-on and emphasizes inclusion and diversity. Classes are small and engaging. There are many opportunities to be involved in the community through on-campus events and locally in Portland.”
