For more than 130 years, smart, strong women have come to Bryn Mawr College to seek an unparalleled education and meaningful opportunities to contribute to the world. That tradition continues and grows today. Bryn Mawr offers a university of academic opportunities in an intimate setting; a close, connected community that fosters lifelong connections; and the preparation women need to lead.
On our historic and verdant suburban campus 11 miles from Philadelphia, a world-class faculty guides and challenges 1,350 undergraduate women and more than 400 graduate women and men from 45 states and 62 countries. Bryn Mawr’s reach extends far beyond our classrooms and our campus. Our location offers students access to the cultural resources of a major metropolitan area and the broad diversity of Bryn Mawr students, faculty, and alumnae/i creates a global community that fosters international experiences, friendships, and networks.
Superb opportunities for independent and faculty-sponsored research, core seminars, connected, interdisciplinary courses, and access to 37 majors and 53 minors and concentrations enable each undergraduate student to create her own academic program. Bryn Mawr was the first women’s college to offer graduate education through the Ph.D. Our outstanding graduate programs — offered to both men and women — add to the intellectual dynamism of our community. Longstanding partnerships with Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges and the University of Pennsylvania give Bryn Mawr students a broad variety of curricular opportunities.
Emily Balch Seminars. The Emily Balch Seminars open the door to the rigorous inquiry that shapes Bryn Mawr’s curriculum. As you choose courses to satisfy requirements, you’ll explore different approaches to inquiry — including empirical investigation, critical interpretation, cross-cultural analysis, and inquiry into the past — that focus the lens through which you view the world and increase your awareness of the world’s complexity.
College Art Club. The Bryn Mawr College Art Club, located in Arnecliffe studio, offers students opportunities throughout the year to create and socialize. Arnecliffe studio is incredibly community focused and is open 24 hours, seven days a week, 365 days a year, to anyone in the Bryn Mawr community with a desire to be creative. Student run, the space is organized and cleaned by students and stocked with materials funded from Bryn Mawr’s Self Government Association.
School Mission & Unique Qualities
Though it is a women’s school, Bryn Mawr students have many options to balance a single-sex education with coed opportunities at neighboring schools such as Haverford and UPenn. The small school hosts unique and engaging educational events throughout the year. The Creative Writing Program Reading Series is an opportunity for students to hear notable authors read excerpts of their famous works.
“Students are able to get to know each other within the class setting, as well as for the professor to know each student. Bryn Mawr is an inclusive setting, where our social honor code fosters trust within the community such that creativity and diversity is always welcomed.”
