McGill University is a public institution that was founded in 1821 and is located in Quebec, Canada. The university has two campuses: the downtown campus in Montreal and the Macdonald campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. The two campuses are approximately 20 miles apart. Montreal offers students a safe, affordable, vibrant environment in which to live and learn. McGill’s downtown campus mixes heritage buildings with modern facilities. Its Macdonald Campus sits amidst fields and forests on the western tip of the Island of Montreal. The primary language of instruction is English, although around half of the population of Montreal speaks French as a first language. Around one-fourth of the student body is international, with students hailing from more than 150 countries. The diverse composition of McGill’s community, plus professors drawn from across the world, fosters an entrepreneurial and creative environment. University housing is available for undergraduate and graduate students on both campuses.

Academics

McGill University’s campuses possess an international reputation for scholarly achievement and scientific discovery across more than 300 programs of study in 11 faculties: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Arts, Continuing Studies, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Management, Medicine, Music, and Science. Around two-thirds of the university’s students study at the undergraduate level. The university is affiliated with multiple teaching hospitals, and its medical school is the oldest in Canada. McGill has more than 40 research centers including the McGill Centre for Bioinformatics, the Centre on Population Dynamics, and the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy. The creation of the first artificial blood cell is among the university’s research achievements. The student-faculty ratio at McGill University is 11:1. Popular majors include Art History, Biology, Life Sciences, and Engineering.

Special Highlights

Micro-ExP. The Micro-ExP Program offers McGill students from all faculties and study levels the chance to gain meaningful work experience through micro-internships. The program is specifically designed for students who may not yet have work experience, addressing the common challenge of “no experience, no job.” Unlike a traditional four-month internship or co-op, Micro-ExP offers students the opportunity to deliver results to an organization in just one week. It’s perfect for students who want to explore a career path, grow their confidence, and hone their professional communication skills. The experiences include completely remote, hybrid, or on-site short-term, unpaid projects or placements that allow students to develop skills and explore industries by providing real work exposure.

Community Building Events. The RLife team (Residence Life) is a group of students motivated and inspired to organize and facilitate programming and activities in McGill residences to help build a strong community, encourage diversity, education, and personal development. RLife oversees seven different portfolios, which have the same objective of creating opportunities for students. Academics & Learning aims to help students with their academic transition from high school to university. Health & Wellness aims to support students to maintain their health and wellness while living in residence. Residence Spirit creates residence spirit among students through various friendly competitions. Residence Councils work with McGill administration on key policy issues, organize social events, and advocate student interests.
