Dartmouth College is a private Ivy League research university situated on a 237-acre campus located in rural Hanover, New Hampshire. Established in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock, it is the ninth-oldest institution of higher education in the US and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Dartmouth is comprised of the undergraduate arts and sciences and engineering departments and four graduate programs, which include the Tuck School of Business, Thayer School of Engineering, and Geisel School of Medicine. The Carnegie Foundation has classified Dartmouth as a university with “very high research activity.”

Academics

By maintaining a flexible quarter-system calendar, and allowing only faculty to teach its undergraduate courses, Dartmouth assures students have complete and timely access to all that the institution has to offer. The professors are among the leaders in their fields, yet they remain fully committed to teaching. Even the most senior professors teach first-year courses. The student-faculty ratio at Dartmouth College is 7:1, and the school has 62% of its classes with fewer than 20 students. Popular majors include: Social Sciences, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, Computer and Information Sciences, and History.

Special Highlights

Arts Across Campus. Creativity is at the heart of a Dartmouth education. The thriving campus arts district unites the Hopkins Center for the Arts, which annually presents a variety of world-class music, dance, theater, and film programs, as well as more than 100 performances; the Hood Museum of Art, which houses one of the oldest and largest American university art collections; and the Black Family Visual Arts Center.

Dartmouth Organic Farm. With a history dating back to the 1980s and 90s, the “O” Farm has grown into a hub for hands on learning at Dartmouth. It is home to an educational working garden, faculty and student research, independent projects, labs and classes, a stunning landscape that serves as a backdrop for social events of all kinds and an ecosystem that engages students in learning about sustainable food and energy systems.

School Mission & Unique Qualities

We expect you to change the world—and we give you the tools to make it happen. The Outing Club – the oldest and largest collegiate outing club in the country – is the most popular student organization at Dartmouth, offering outdoor activities, expeditions, gear rentals and courses. Dartmouth is also the birthplace of the programming language BASIC.

Student Reviews…

“Dartmouth’s student to professor ratio is unmatched by most elite institutions. The ability to meet one on one with professors, enjoy small class sizes, and receive individualized attention in my classes is overall what made my experience and the cost of Dartmouth worth it.”
