Woodberry Forest School is an exceptional boarding school community for motivated boys in grades nine through twelve. We were founded in 1889 on a central Virginia farm originally owned by the family of President James Madison. Today our stunning, 1200-acre campus attracts students from all over the nation and around the world. Our academic and athletic facilities, some classic and others state-of-the-art, rival those at many small colleges We offer all of the amenities essential in a quality residential community and a location convenient to Charlottesville, Richmond, and Washington, DC.

The purpose of the school is to develop in its students, under Christian principles, a high sense of honor and moral integrity, a deep respect for sound scholarship, a full acceptance of responsibility, a love of excellence, and a will toward personal sacrifice in service to others. It is likewise its mission, based on these ideals, to develop its students into leaders, to train its students toward a useful contribution to the democratic society in which they live, and to give them thorough preparation for the best colleges and universities consistent with their individual potentials.

 Academics

At Woodberry, we understand how boys learn and how to help them succeed. As a Woodberry student, you will enjoy a broad range of experiences to balance your academic, artistic, physical, and spiritual development. By offering you well-conceived challenges – together with support and encouragement in our exceptional residential community – you will develop self-confidence and a desire to achieve excellence throughout your life. Woodberry is committed to helping you acquire the strong values and capacity to reason that enable you to deal effectively with important intellectual, ethical, and social problems and to lead a rewarding life.

 Special Highlights

Woodberry Forest Golf Club. Our golf facilities are unmatched. We play our home matches on our own nine-hole golf course. We also have the Graves Golf Practice Area, built in 1991, which has a driving range, two practice greens and sand bunkers. In 2009 we added a golf video lab. We have both 2-D and 3-D motion capture systems, plus computer software to analyze the golf swing.

Spiritual Life. One of the abiding principles of Woodberry Forest is the belief that students should have a reverence for things sacred. Although Woodberry was founded on Christian principles, the school does not maintain formal ties to any particular denomination. Each Sunday evening in St. Andrew’s Chapel, non-denominational services for the students, faculty, and surrounding community take place. As a Woodberry student you will have the opportunity to hear visiting speakers in the chapel several times during the year, and to participate in weekly meetings of the Christian fellowship.
