Rectory, located on 138 picturesque acres in northeastern Connecticut, is devoted to the total development of each student in a nurturing environment that celebrates the individual and helps each student discover his and her passion for learning. Our flexible curriculum, caring faculty, small classes, and extensive offerings in the arts and athletics serve students across a broad range of abilities.

Whether exploring our website or our campus, you quickly see that The Rectory School is defined by a sense of community that pervades all aspects of school life. This theme was rooted in the School’s founding in 1920, when the Reverend and Mrs. Bigelow sought to provide an individualized education for their son, John, and their neighbors’ children in a caring, home environment.

At the heart of our philosophy is the desire to inspire excitement about learning. Our goal is that students leave Rectory with an inquisitive mind while constantly embracing the core values of the School Creed: Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, and Compassion. A commitment to these ideals and a belief in the value of education will encourage our graduates to lead meaningful, contributory lives.

 Academics

Today, teaching and learning remain at the heart of Rectory’s mission; however, the Rectory experience goes far beyond the classroom. Our dedicated faculty and staff take responsibility for each student’s emotional, social, and physical well-being, as well as his or her educational success. In such a secure setting, students are free to challenge themselves and take risks that will lead them to realize their full potential.

 Special Highlights

MARS. Music At Rectory School (MARS) is our unique after-school program that brings high quality music instruction to students throughout our local community in northeastern Connecticut. Weekly, private lessons from accomplished musicians accommodate any level of musical development. Instruction is available on most band and orchestral instruments as well as piano, guitar, and voice. The MARS faculty is experienced music instructors and performers from the area.

Hoops for Hunger. Hoops for Hunger is a free basketball clinic where the price of “admission” is a canned good to help families in northeastern Connecticut who need groceries. At the same time, the clinic satisfies the craving among Rectory’s varsity basketball players to be on the court, while providing the area youngsters with some game tactics and ball handling skills from these talented players. Mary Lou Seaward, Brad’s wife and Rectory teacher, responded, “It’s a win-win-win situation.”
