St. Anne’s-Belfield School, the product of the merging of several strong academic traditions, has a rich heritage reaching back to the opening of The Albemarle Female Institute in 1856.

It is not an easy task to strike the appropriate balance between the new and the old. This task becomes even more difficult in a school like St. Anne’s-Belfield, which is rich in history and whose students and alumni have been blessed with achievement and success for over a century. Yet it is essential to delivering our mission that we continue the practices and traditions that have defined the school and created a culture of excellence while we also nurture an environment of innovation, improvement, and creativity.

Although we expect our graduates to be prepared for the nation’s finest colleges and universities, our true purpose is to create a challenging yet charitable atmosphere where students gain skills necessary for both creative and disciplined thought, where they have opportunities to achieve in athletic and artistic endeavors, where they understand their responsibility as a member of a community, and where high expectations for both their personal and intellectual lives are complemented by the School’s commitment to nurturing students in the spiritual dimension of life.

 Academics

Our curriculum outlines the many steps of the educational journey of our school. At each level, we try to introduce appropriate material in logical sequence. We prepare the way of our youngest students by first defining and describing the destination of our oldest. Our program models our belief that children of different ages are capable of traveling different distances and that children of the same age often need to choose their own pace. We will continue to adjust the pace and the scope of our curriculum to ensure a program, excellent and exhilarating, for these young people whom we teach and with whom we learn.

 Special Highlights

Upper School Visual Arts. The Upper School studio art courses offer a wide range of opportunities for both the beginning and the advanced student. Beginning students explore a rich foundation of drawing, design, and painting. The more advanced students work to identify and develop their particular interests through a body of work that can be submitted as a part of an AP Drawing portfolio.

Community Service. Community Service is an integral part of a St. Anne’s-Belfield School education and an important facet of school life. Through Community Service, we hope to assist students in developing an awareness of their responsibility to their school and community. Community Service can also broaden the students’ education by encouraging their involvement with those in need.
