Millbrook School is a small, coeducational, college preparatory boarding school where close, nurturing, and stimulating relationships between students and their teachers have been the school’s hallmark since its founding. Our goal is to promote in each student the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical growth which will lead to a life both individually satisfying and valuable to the greater society.

To fulfill this mission, Millbrook School offers a rigorous, varied and comprehensive curriculum which is individually oriented, includes all aspects of learning, and requires meaningful, active involvement in the daily life of the school. Equally important, we attract and maintain a faculty with a demonstrated commitment and the ability to teach in a variety of roles, as well as a capable, motivated, and diverse student body.

 Academics

Classes are places where respect for one another, for the free exchange of ideas and opinions, is a most prized commodity. Within a traditional, rigorous college preparatory course of study, Millbrook students are encouraged to be curious, involved, and active learners, for the teachers with whom they work understand that the success of any educational pursuit lies in the vigor and commitment that students bring to it. The acquisition of knowledge and skills, though critical to our mission, is but a component of a Millbrook education. The ability to read effectively, write clearly, and think independently are of greatest use when students challenge themselves, listen carefully to their classmates, test their own limits, and question their assumptions.

 Special Highlights

Intersession. Intersession is an experiential learning opportunity that falls in the middle of the second semester, breaking routine just as winter comes to a close and daily life is synonymous with a long trudge through the slush and snow. Students and faculty spend a rewarding week exploring subjects and ideas not usually taught in a traditional classroom setting. Together, they examine issues and pursue new endeavors, working closely with others with whom they might not normally engage. Intersession is a timely and gratifying program with course offerings that change annually.

Culminating Experience for Seniors. All seniors at Millbrook are required to complete a Culminating Experience during their senior year. The purpose of this program is to provide our seniors with an opportunity to develop their intellectual independence in a particular discipline or disciplines by engaging in an authentic intellectual project as part of the culmination of their academic career at Millbrook. Seniors are required to present their findings in a formal presentation to members of the Millbrook community.
