At Holderness, we begin with an affirmation of the bonds that unite us to friends and family and teachers, to the breadth of humankind, and to God and all creation. We affirm the role that such bonds play in learning. We believe that community cultivates character, and that character sustains and reinforces community. At Holderness, all community members are asked to lead through strength of character, and all students participate in programs that test and enhance character.

We celebrate intellectual achievement and nurture its catalysts—curiosity, passion, and initiative. We also celebrate the learning that occurs no less crucially in settings other than the classroom – the chapel, the dormitories, the athletic fields, the outdoors, and the Job Program – and the fundamental connections that exist between them.

 Academics

At Holderness, we insist on involvement and a readiness to accept new challenges. We believe that effort and determination, even in the face of setbacks, prepare the way for success, and that such resolve is most available to those involved in a warm and supportive community.

 Special Highlights

Special Programs. Project Outreach, a celebration of community service; Artward Bound, an exploration of one’s creativity and imagination; Out Back, an exhilarating experience challenging kids in an outdoor setting; and the programs of Honors Thesis and Senior Colloquium, offering powerful and individualized learning experiences.

Studio Art. Through the study of drawing, painting, and printmaking students explore, develop, and train both their eye and their mind to observe the world and reframe their experience and understanding into visual images. Courses range from basic to advanced levels, and are held in a spacious and light-filled studio environment that invites creativity and experimentation.
