Located in the in heart of the Rocky Mountains, just 30 miles from Aspen, Colorado Rocky Mountain School is a small school whose students graduate with big ambition. CRMS combines rigorous academics, outdoor and work experiences, arts, community service, and campus life. This comprehensive approach to education develops not only strong students but also engaged young adults with a global awareness and a local spirit.

Colorado Rocky Mountain School’s unique educational mission comes from combining John Dewey’s belief that “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” We prepare our students for a lifetime of learning and growth through a challenging college-preparatory academic program, an afternoon program that connects our students with healthy and engaging sports and work crews, and an Outward Bound-inspired outdoor-trip program.

 Academics

Colorado Rocky Mountain School instills in its boarding and day students the desire to live a purposeful and vital life from a foundation of idealism, compassion, reflection, and growth. Underlying all aspects of the CRMS experience are three essential values that guide our actions and decisions: Academic, Active, and Community. The academic program includes English, history, math, science, Spanish, and the arts and is complemented by the active curriculum which incorporates outdoor and athletic offerings, work crews, Wilderness, Fall and Spring trips, Senior Project, and Interim.

 Special Highlights

Arts & Music. The art facilities are extensive and well equipped. Students are encouraged to use them for independent work as well as classroom assignments. The visual arts courses combine studio work with theory, aesthetics, criticism, and an appreciation for the role of the arts in other academic disciplines throughout history and in other cultures. Students elect a variety of arts that expose them to two- and three-dimensional art.

World Night. Music is studied in small ensembles in which students can learn styles, including chamber, classical, country, folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, and ethnic music. CRMS music students learn to appreciate music through research, the study of music fundamentals, theory, technique, and professional live performance. Individual instrumental and vocal techniques are improved through the study of articulation, intonation, tone quality, tempo, interpretation, phrasing, and posture.
